Post by: escobert on June 07, 2015, 12:04:48 PM
Hey guys! So, I have a 10xxxxxx gun and i was under the impression it's a 66' but, after doing reading here, You guys say otherwise! So which is it? :p Either way I love the rifle and my only wish is I had known a little more before hand and tried to get a bladed model. I'll just have to get one in the future :D

Thanks! I traded a Bulgarian 74 for it. I know the 74 is worth more monetarily, but I REALLY wanted an SKS and had no cash and this just looked too nice to pass up. Also with the 5.45 nonsense and it being impossible to find locally it wasn't hard to part with the 74. I just wish I had kept the furniture as it was real Russian tiger stripe.

Superb example of a 1965 Jianshe .   thumb1

Being in that condition and unmolsted, I would call it collectable.  I'm collecting every year from /26\ and I still need a 10m 1965.   pullhair1

Beautiful example, definitely "drooling" material!

Hi escobert,

First off welcome to the boards, we're glad to have you here.

This is a beautiful specimen.  It's easily in excellent condition and could very well be pristine if you had the original box, accessories, and paperwork for it.  Just an outstanding example of a type 56 from a very important transitional year.  Your gun has a short lug, spike bayonet, early style bolt carrier, side swivel stock, early bayo lug.  All these things changed in the 10 mil series (perhaps minus the barrel lug and bayo which may have changed in the late 9 millions) and we're working on figuring out exactly in what S/N range those changed took place.

Read through the Q: When was my Chinese Type 56 SKS made? (https://clone.sks-files.com/chinese-sks-military/17/q-when-was-my-chinese-type-56-sks-made/360/) thread to understand why most of us here think you have a 1965 built gun.  The problem with the "1956 + million = year" theory is there isn't a single shred of physical proof that it's correct.  Hopefully when we include the proof such as the T53 S/N progression, T54 S/N progression, information from the records of KFS, and deciphering certain markings on known Chinese crates it should be pretty clear that "Nth year of production" theory we subscribe to is the correct one.  If there was evidence pointing to the "1956 + millions" theory, I'd be the first one to push it, but it's simply not there.

Thanks guys! Boy wouldn't it be nice if the Chinese would just release the dating system. I've been debating if I want tech sites on it but, I don't want to have to permanently do anything to it since it is in such nice shape. The stock does have a few minor dings. It seems lil even bubbad yugos are going for around 500 so I had to jump on this one quick when I saw it.

Oh and what are your guys thoughts on the yooper John sks info? Everyone seems to site his page for sks info

Yooper was one of the first guys to consolidate all things SKS into a single site.   Unfortunately certain things that were once thought to be true are still featured prominently on his site and it just doesn't seem like he's in much of a hurry to correct them even when someone points them out.  This helps promote myths in the collecting community that people simply accept on account of who's promoting them.  That's a pretty poor way to do science, in the end the data always rules regardless of what's popular or who pushes which hypothesis.

He's a nice guy and his site is very valuable, just not as up to date as I'd like to see.

I was using his site quite a bit (and also giving it out to people) but had seen a few others on FB say his info on there wasn't so accurate. I just don't wanna be giving out bad info to people!

The yooperj site is usually the first site we all find when first searching for SKS stuff. Like you...I started there, then found the other forum, then found the people on the other forum to be hard headed and wrong on many things. And that's why we started this one :)

His site is fine and it's fine to promote whatever site you think is best.  Of course over at SKSboards, you try and promote this site, or anything on SKSGuide, and it gets converted to *****'s if you're lucky, or you get the post deleted or get banned if you're not lucky.  What little respect I had left for the admin over there is pretty much out the window with that petty bitterness.  They act like children, plugging their ears and yelling and screaming at the top of their voice.

To be fair, if you type in 'sks-boards' here, it gets translated into sksboards. That started as a little joke among the founding members here and we'll likely get rid of it one of these days.  It can be easily circumvented by changing the capitalization as in SKSboards.  It's not intended to keep traffic away from their site or to act as a censor like their broad-brushed ban is that is almost impossible to get around; more of a poke in the eye for how they've treated some very good members.

haha it's all good. I've been using forums since I was a pre-teen so I know how things can get :p I just wanna learn as much as I can about stuff and find forums the easiest way to do so.

It really is sad. A big part of learning, is being open to new findings and information. Sticking your fingers in your ears and going "la la la la la" when someone tries to point out new information does nobody any help. And then yelling your wrong info at people trying to learn, turns people off. Last time I went over there, the same two or three guys seemed like they were actually going out of their way in threads to spew their wrong info. Making big deals out of things like "this is an M" when nobody even asked. We aren't perfect over here....but we're always open to new ideas, theories, and any information that can be used to prove those ideas. We are looking to crack the codes....not encase old information in concrete forever.

Back to 10m /26\....

I am starting to wonder if the transition to the 'orange' shellac occurred sometime in the 10m range too, I have a fairly early 10m and it has the typical oil finish found on earlier models.  Lately I have been seeing later 10m's with the shellac such as the OP has shown.  Is there anything to that?

Boy it sure is nice having something that LC still covets though.  bat1

Huh, I've only seen 1 10mil that ha the older stock finish. Most I've seen are similar to mine. I actually think the older finish looks "better". Well, more militaryish in my opinion.

After posting I realized that Powersurge's is actually after mine serial wise, so there may be nothing to that...all seem to have the /8\ though.  Boy it sure is fun thinking about this stuff....it is way better than crossword puzzles, it's not like the Chinese are likely to post the results in tomorrows paper. :)

My 11 mil /26\  stock doesn't have the number 8 stamp but it has the orange tint shellac. It's a replacement, not original to the carbine.

The picture of the 11 mil on the guide page, shows a Triangle 3.

What wood is used for these stocks?

楸树, qiu shu wood. Commonly known in the firearms community as "chu wood".

Cool, thanks! Is Chu the only wood that was used on Chinese or do different years have differing wood types?

We really should say 'everyone on the web says that the Chinese stocks are made from chu/catalpa.'  I've never actually seen a primary source that unequivocally states this as well as showing the evidence to collaborate the conclusion. I'm not saying it's wrong, just that it's been regurgitated so often throughout the web that I really want to verify things before I put the RM stamp of approval on it. :)   There are too many rumors taken as fact out there for my liking.  :-\

Coincidentally we actually have a US Forestry service lab lined up and three stock samples ready to send in.  I'm allowed four samples in one submission, so I've been holding out for another stock, but it's been six months now and I've missed out on some great deals on eBay that would have been perfect.  Maybe I just need to get off my rear and send what I have in and see if they can determine genus and species (supposedly the larger/more samples, the more accurate they can be)

That's pretty cool! It'll be interesting to hear/see what the results are. I was just doing a quick search on Chu Wood and there's not a ton of info out there on it, just that everything Chinese "has it".
