Title: NK Type 63
Post by: Loose}{Cannon on October 14, 2016, 05:02:02 PM
Just received, and to be honest, looks better in person then from the GB pics.  The gun is definitely 100 percent matching, and yes, the finish is very oiled but original.  I forgot to take out the trigger housing and mag for the pics, but the trigger is still loaded with an odd cosmo, and the mag spring area also.

Unfortunately, no papers in the butt.

Stock has two rear pins rather then a rear ceossbolt like the russian laminate.

Two pins up front also...

Something I found interesting... the Circle Star stamp shows though to the bottom side of the receiver cover.

Another thing I found very interesting is that the bolt face has a prominent back-cut channel around the outside and only the center of the round is supported.   No idea why they would do this.

I have also NEVER seen the inside of a gas block this clean and pristine...

Another cool characteristic...  The upper front left side of the receiver has a 'flat' area similar to an early russian.  The profile on the other side however is rounded like normal with only a very small ridge.

Can still see cosmo in some areas of the receiver.

And I'm fairly certain this bayo screw has never been removed and is originally staked.

I dont think so... the early russians have similar and there wasn't any 'purpose' for it.  M08 hasn't seen this on any other NK before.

interesting....Wonder if it was an early part of the milling/manufacture process then? Odd though that the NK's would be both if so. Good stuff man. Any1 know what kind of relations NK had with Russia? ( Kinda like what we know about the early sino-soviet china days, type relations)

The Russians certainly supplied North Korea with small arms, heavy weapons, and aircraft in the late 40's early '50s. Since the PRC, not Russia, came to the rescue of NK in the Autumn of 1950, they certainly had stronger influence and ties to NK.  Kim Il-sung, like Mao Tse tung, was more of a Stalinist, so the post-54 liberalization era didn't sit well with either China or NK.  Relations between Russian and NK soured rapidly from 1956 onward, so by 1963 I doubt that the North Koreans were receiving a lot of active assistance from Russia with setting up SKS production. I would suspect it was Chinese assistance.  I do not know this for certain and don't have references so take my hand-waving with a grain of salt   :))

That is one sweet piece of history. One would think some freshly cut firewood would be in order for the shoot. What did you go solar or something?  rofl

Seriously...I am very happy for you. :)

Speculation on the bolt face...
Could it be that would allow enough pressure and perhaps some gases to escape from a popped primer preventing firing pin/bolt damage?  Possibly something to do with using them to launch grenades? Perhaps just a way to simplify machining or to lighten the bolt?  Supreme Leader worries over patent infringment...or just to be weird? Interesting for sure...also interesting that M08 hasn't seen the flat side receiver before too....I also wondered if that might be for something to do with a grenade launcher similar to the Chinese one...with a more secure area to mount to?  Questions that are out of my pay grade...thanks for sharing! :)

Without an understanding of the serial sequence, it's tough to tell if the flat on the receiver is an early or late feature.  I'm sure it has a purpose, though.  Also, difficult to speculate, but a flat surface does allow for easier attachment of external accessories such as a GL sight.

No gas cut-off on this one.

I will need to check my bolt face on mine later today.  This is also a feature which I didn't pick up on when I had three of them to observe.

Great example at a great price.

Take a look at that flat area of the receiver when the bolt is closed.  The carrier slides right over it, so I have a hard time imagining something mounting to there or whatever.   :-\

Both my memory and observation skills must be a little cloudy, even though it's been decades since the whacky weed days.

Yes, mine has the receiver flat at the left front, top side.  Also has the milling ring around the bolt face.  The receiver cover stamp can be viewed on the bottom side of the cover, too.

The upper left side of the receiver, next to the operating rod housing, has a wear pattern on many of my SKS examples which do not have the milled flat.  The bolt carrier actually contacts the receiver at this point on closing.

The NK doesn't have as large of a wear pattern.

Here is a Chinese bringbck (9mil).

So does that eliminate that last little click if you don't slam the carrier home?

That last little 1/8" or so you have to push forward to fully close after thumbing down the cartridges to close the bolt without chambering is what I am referring to.

I think what you are feeling there Justin, is the rear of the bolt dropping down into the receiver. You don't feel it when chambering a round because the case in the front of the bolt holds the bolt where it is supposed to be, essentially giving the bolt a pivot point for it to arc down into the receiver in the rear when closed. If you cycle the gun by hand with no cartridge, the bolt still jiggles around a bit, so the angle for it to lock into the receiver at the rear during that last 1/8" isn't always right and it needs a little extra push.

Yep, you are right, I didn't look inside while I was just trying to duplicate it without a mag. That is it, but it sure looked like the carrier might be hitting where that flat spot is on the NK. I was thinking maybe the flat spot was to prevent that little hang up preventing it from going fully into battery...but it does seem like the bolt is responsible for it.   That little hang up is a pet peeve of mine. It would be nice to chamber a round without all the racket.
