Title: Serial Number Stamped on Right Side of Stock?
Post by: cztulsa on January 14, 2017, 08:26:07 AM
Ran across what appears to be a very light "Liski" refurbed Izhevsk '54 with the serial stamped on the right side of the stock (SN only - no arsenal or date), with the horizontally-stamped SN on the left.  Rifle also has the horizontally-stamped number on the upper handguard.  Rifle is in very nice condition, but I've never seen an SKS with the SN stamped (vertically) on the right side.  Is this one an odballl?

Yup, photos would definitely help.  I've seen what you speak of on Romys before - it's not a common sight, but not one-of-a-kind rare on those either.  Can't say I've seen a Russian with these features, they were pretty meticulous with what went on the right vs what went on the left of a stock.

As an aside, Ruslan Chumak changed his analysis of /1\ that we associate with the horizontal stock/handguard S/Ns.  He no longer thinks it's 1871st ABV out of Liski and is now fairly certain it is 41st Central ABV out of Irkutsk.  thumb1

Well, Liski, Irkutsk, they're only 5800km apart.../1\  thumb1

I was eyeballing this in my search for stocks...found it interesting, but didn't look into what it might be from...

I'd guess a refurbed Romy with that style number, sling swivel, and wood type.

Hey CZ,

Saw the photos you posted on gunboards (http://www.SKSboards.com/smf/index.php?topic=144374.msg1704357#msg1704357).

Stock is not only a replacement, but it is a late hardwood variety (~'55 to '56) when they were scrimping together otherwise unusable blanks that were too short with toe splices to make upt hte difference. Very clear bond line on this one.  Looks like a beautiful gun but if you get it you should certainly post photos or carefully scrutinize the receiver S/N along with the receiver cover S/N and the FSB and takedown lever to 100% verify that it's indeed an Izhevsk.  'Matching' Izhevsk covers do *not* automatically mean the gun is an Izhevsk.  It's a common mistake and could be a pricey oversight if the gun is at the high price range.

Also, I looked in the database.  I can't quite 100% be certain what the prefix is on the stock but I'm guessing ГБ  If so, I have zero documented guns with that prefix.  If it's a ГВ, there is a verified '54 Izhevsk with that prefix.  If anything else, well I didn't search for anything besides those two!  :P

Glad you said something - what is the difference between the FSB and takedown lever between Tula an Izhevsk SKSs?  I never knew there was a difference.  Also, I can't do the Cyrillic font, but it is the first iteration you posted, not the second.

A '54 Izhevsk will have a angled/lightening cut FSB, not either of the straight cut versions.  They will also have a short tabbed receiver cover takedown lever and a tabbed gas tube take down laver.  It's not much, but comparing those two help to weed out something that might have been humped.  When spending several hundred $$'s it is well worth it to take a look over everything and make sure it conforms to the norm.  If it doesn't, then the next thing is to find out why (refurbishment, bubba'd, humped gun, etc.) before spending your hard earned money or passing until the next opportunity presents itself.
